Amanda Brugel

(February 27th, 2010 - Toronto ON) Pointe Claire is a quiet community located on that part of the island of Montreal that is known as the West Island. It is a bit of a mystery as the West Island can be confusing to those unfamiliar of its purpose. It is often believed that it is an island west of Montreal however the West Island encompasses everything between the two cities in Lachine as well as West. The West Island is frequently referred to as the birthplace of Amanda Brugel but while that is the case, her time there was not long. Brugel grew-up in Courtice close to Oshawa the city of Ontario. She initially wanted to be an actor, However, following a dramatic increase in size, her friends were no longer able to dance along with her. In a recent interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels, I'm 6 feet, 1 inch." As I got bigger than my male dancers, I decided to quit. A lot of dancers go from dancing into acting. As for the Brugel family, it was their drama instructor who pushed her in that direction. The teacher suggested she try to find a role in school's annual production. She auditioned and was cast in the role of Anne of Green Gables. She was given an Fine Arts Talent Scholarship to go to York University's Theatre Program and graduated at the age of 20 with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. Over the past 20 years since Brugel has landed roles on more than 60 productions across the big and small screens drawing the most media attention after she was offered the role in the role of Rita in the award-winning show The Handmaid's Tale (pictured below). Brugel, the only Canadian of the Season 1 actors of the series as well as appearing only on occasion, was the sole Canadian.
